How to Start SEO for Your PersonalWebsite

By Dhilna Fathima, digital marketing strategist in Wayanad

When I first built my own website, I thought the hard part was over once it went live. The design looked good, the pages loaded, and I was proud of it. Then I searched for myself on Google and found nothing. That was the day I understood that a website without SEO is like a shop with no board on the road. It exists, but nobody can find it. If you run a personal website, whether you are a freelancer, a consultant or a small business owner, SEO is how people discover you without you chasing them. As a digital marketing strategist in Wayanad, I have seen many talented people stay invisible online only because they never learned where to begin. So let me walk you through the steps I would follow if I were starting again today

Start with one clear goal

Before you touch a single setting, decide what you want your website to do. Maybe you want enquiries from local businesses. Maybe you want to be known as the go-to person for a particular skill. Your goal shapes every choice that follows, from the words you use to the pages you build. Also think about who you want to reach. A homestay owner in Kalpetta searches very differently from a startup founder in Bengaluru. Write down the kind of person you want to attract, and keep that picture in front of you while you work.

Do simple keyword research

Keywords are just the words people type into Google when they need help. Many beginners go after huge terms like “digital marketing” and wonder why they never rank. The competition there is enormous, and the visitors are not always ready to hire anyone.
A smarter path is to choose specific phrases that match what you really offer and where you work. A phrase such as “digital marketing strategist in Wayanad” tells Google exactly who you are, what you do and which area you serve. Fewer people search it, but the ones who do are much closer to becoming clients.
You do not need expensive tools to begin. Type your main phrase into Google and look at the suggestions that appear below the search bar and the “People also ask” box. Those are real questions from real people. Free tools like Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends can add more ideas. Pick one main keyword for each page and a few related phrases to support it.

Put your keyword where it matters

Once you have your main phrase, place it in the spots Google pays attention to. Use it in your page title, your main heading, the first hundred words, one or two subheadings, the page URL and the meta description. Add it to the alt text of your images too.
The important thing is to keep it natural. If a sentence sounds strange when you read it aloud, rewrite it. Google has become very good at understanding meaning, and visitors leave quickly when a page feels stuffed with repeated words. Write for a person first and the search engine second.

Get the technical basics right

You do not have to be a developer, but a few basics can make or break your rankings.
First, make sure your site is secure, which means it should load with https. Second, check that it works well on a phone, since most Indian users browse on mobile. Third, keep your pages fast. Compress your images, remove plugins you do not use and choose decent hosting. If you work on WordPress, an SEO plugin like Rank Math or Yoast can guide you through titles, descriptions and sitemaps without much effort.
Also keep your menu simple. A visitor should reach your services, about and contact pages within a click or two

Use local SEO to your advantage

This is where being rooted in a place helps a lot. Create a Google Business Profile and fill in every detail honestly. Add your service area, a proper description, your photos and your contact information. Ask happy clients to leave genuine reviews.
Mention your location naturally across your site. Your about page, your service pages and your contact page can all reflect that you work from Wayanad and serve clients in Kerala and beyond. When someone nearby searches for help, these small signals make it easier for Google to show you

Create content that actually helps

A website that never changes slowly fades from search results. Blogging is the easiest way to keep it alive. Write about the questions your clients ask you again and again. How much does a website cost? How long does SEO take? Why is my business not showing on Google Maps?
Write in your own voice, the way you would explain it to a client over chai. Share your own experiences, small wins and mistakes. This is what makes content feel human, and it is also what keeps it original. Copying from other sites or rewriting someone else’s article will only hurt you in the long run

Build trust through links

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours, and they work like recommendations. You can earn them by guest posting, being listed in genuine business directories, getting mentioned in local news or sharing useful resources that others want to quote. Go slowly here. A few good links are worth far more than hundreds of poor ones

Track what is working

Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics from the start. Search Console shows which searches bring people to your site and which pages need attention. Analytics shows how visitors behave once they arrive. Check them once a month, notice patterns and improve one thing at a time

Be patient with the process

SEO is not a quick trick. Most websites need a few months before they see steady movement, and the results keep growing the longer you stay consistent. Some weeks will feel slow. Keep publishing, keep improving and keep learning.
If you take just one step today, make it this. Choose your main keyword, write one helpful page around it, and publish it. That first page is the beginning of everything else.
